Understanding Foreign Energy - Part 2
This information was originally shared with my newsletter subscribers on Nov. 21, 2025.
How much of your reality are YOU actually creating?
As mentioned in part 1, in the metaphysical world, energy that isn’t ours is termed foreign energy. This can include belief systems, opinions, memories, energetic cords, past lives, ancestral karma, spirit attachments, as well as outdated spiritual contracts & agreements.
In healing work (whether counselling, body work, or otherwise) we may explore what lies beneath our physical experiences. Often, we discover some form of foreign energy living in our subconsciousness - a memory, someone’s advice we became attached to, past trauma, generational imprints etc.
The Subconscious Mind
Our subconscious mind is helpful in that it stores past information to keep us safe, but I was recently reminded that it drives an incredible 95% of our behaviors, emotions, and thoughts! In other words, we are shaped almost entirely by old experiences, influences, values, and beliefs - both ours and those we have inherited. Are you acting from an experience your Great Grandmother had 100 years ago? Potentially.
Why a Healing Practice Helps
As I mentioned in part 1, we are constantly exposed to foreign energy (media, other people etc.). Most of the time we take it in, process it, release it and carry on. However, sometimes it gets stuck and stays with us for a long time. We find ourselves repeating old cycles that impede our emotional, mental, relational, and spiritual growth.
But here’s the key : Foreign energy can only stick to something within you that hurts, and when you heal that, the foreign energy releases with ease.
Often foreign energy enters your field to help you (or someone else) feel better, safer, stronger, wiser etc. With time, you reach a place of readiness to heal and grow and that’s where a healing practice is helpful.
Healing work creates space for your own authentic energy to inform your decisions and actions. Establishing authority in your own life is really and truly about releasing what isn’t you (including what isn’t you, anymore). This is the essence of healing; it’s a remembering -a reclaiming - of who you really are.
So, if you desire something new for your life or for the world around you, it’s best to create from the part of you, that’s actually YOU.
In the last blog post, I offered a visualization meditation to clear out your own energy field. Below are more basic ways you can support your own process of being a truer, healthier version of yourself.
7 DIY Methods to De-program and Declutter Yourself
(Healing is not a one size fits all solution. As always, take what resonates, leave what doesn’t.)
1) Self-Inquiry:
Apply a method of self-inquiry to work towards becoming more present and curious about your behaviors. Start by asking yourself, why am I doing this? You may generate a superficial answer at first, but with practice you may begin to uncover motivating factors that feel deeper.
Does the underlying motivation feel true and aligned for you? It can be surprising what you might discover about yourself when you ask these questions regarding even the most menial things, like why am I brushing my teeth? Why am I doing this job? Why am I reaching for my phone? When you see old or externally acquired patterns you’d like to let go of, take action (even miniscule ones) towards choosing new behaviors.
2) Somatic Movement:
Soma simply means body, so this is a great option if you have chronic body pain. Somatic exercise focuses on slow intentional movement while experiencing the sensations. This form of therapy can help you become more fluent in the language of your body - the subtle cues that indicate whether something aligns within you or not, and where old energy or experiences have become stuck.
Here is a resource if you’re interested in exploring somatic practices.
3) Ceremony:
There are many ways to ceremoniously release foreign energy. Fire is an incredible element for transforming energy and transmuting what you’re ready to release.
You can cleanse yourself (and spaces) by burning plant medicine bundles like sage, tobacco, cedar, or palo santo. Hold a fire ceremony by burning old items, an intention or letter you’ve written down, or by simply watching the flames dance and imagining placing what isn’t yours into the flames.
Two important factors when it comes to ceremonial release is a clear intention and a gracious heart.
When wording your intention, be clear about what you are releasing as well what you welcome in its place. Spirit works in unusual ways, so you may wish to also request that a healing be powerful, yet kind, gentle, and easefully integrated.
4) Spatial, Digital, and Physical Cleanse:
The stuff you accumulate carries energy. Declutter your home and workplace of old stuff and energetically clear your spaces on a seasonal basis. I offered an energy clearing meditation for your spaces in a previous newsletter, you can access it here.
We are overloaded with digital stuff too. Purge old files from your computers, tablets, and phones. Consider the media you ingest – the news, podcasts, social platforms, movies, email lists etc. Do they uplift you? If not, maybe it’s time to unsubscribe? Media influences us in powerful ways.
Since what you physically ingest literally becomes a part of you, proactively, infuse gratitude into your meals. To assist your body in releasing toxins (old energy) exercise, try a detox diet or a fast, soak in a salt bath, or sweat it out with a sauna.
5) Sound Healing:
We all have our own unique “song” - a sound frequency and vibrational range.
The more foreign energy we house within our bodies and energy fields, the more out-of-tune our song becomes. Frequency, vibration and sound can tease out discordant energy peacefully, yet often, powerfully.
With sound healing, such as humming, vocal toning or listening to binaural music (as well as sound baths or tuning fork therapy), your “song” naturally shifts to a more harmonic state allowing you to attract and manifest from a truer personal vibration.
Are you struggling with:
+ Pain, Distraction, Insomnia? Listen to music in the “Alpha” frequency.
+ Anxiety, Tension, Hypervigilance? Listen to music in the “Beta” frequency.
+ Emotional Freeze State, Dissociation? Listen to music in the “Delta” frequency.
+ Depression, Overwhelm, Fear? Listen to music in the “Theta” frequency.
6) Journal, Then Review:
Have a regular practice to write down your thoughts, experiences, desires, and insights. It is astounding how affirming and enlightening a journal can be, especially when you take the time to go back and review it now and again. Sometimes what we write can seem relatively benign, but when we review later, it is so helpful in recognizing patterns, affirming desired changes or actions taken. Journaling can be hugely confidence inspiring - a result of owning your energy!
7) Narrow Your Focus:
Emotional overwhelm can indicate an influx of foreign energy, perhaps from watching the news, seeking advice, or even getting lost in your own thoughts of past or future experiences.
Focus on your body or your breath and call your energy back. If the overwhelm feels external or perhaps out of your control, shrink your focus to you now and what you can shift for you, now. Shift to creativity.
The mind is a powerful creator! Visualize, dream, and imagine what a beautiful, harmonious existence looks or feels like to you. When we focus on possibility, especially with an open heart, our energy flows towards creating it.
